UFC update LEGALIZED. Today the New York State Assembly spent three hours debating, but voted 113-25 in favor of a bill that effectively legalizes and regulates professional mixed martial arts. New York is the last state to regulate the sport by creating an athletic commission (or allowing an existing boxing commission) to take care of the industry. It seems a bit strange, but the only registered lobby to work against legal MMA in New York was a culinary union from Las Vegas, who don’t like the people who own the UFC very much. So that, mixed with the difficulty of wrangling local politicians with some especially ignorant opinions, made passing legislation in that very last state the most arduous battle of them all. This wild subculture-turned-professional-sport we all love so dearly owes a debt of gratitude to the @ufc for spending so much time establishing safety legislation everywhere, even in the states and countries it never visits or makes money in. This was a big win for everyone. Oh, and shouts out to Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle for doing such a great job defending and representing martial arts today. Dassit!
