Earlier today MMAJunkie translated a report from a Brazlian website which reported that the former consensus #1 Light Heavyweight in the world went into his fight at UFC 76 with a knee injury. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (16-3-0) is not using the injury as an excuse, as he just stated that the injury hindered his training and conditioning. This obviously makes a Liddell vs. Rua fight on the UFC 79 card impossible.
The article did go on to say that Rua will undergo knee surgery this Friday (tomorrow), the California State Athletic Commission did not medically suspend “Shogun” at all, while Forrest Griffin (15-4-0) on the other hand was suspended for 60 days because of the huge cut he has on his forehead from the elbow he took in the second round.
You couldn’t tell during the fight that “Shogun” was hurt, but his conditioning was a major factor after the first round, let’s hope that we can see “Shogun” return sometime soon.
