The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts organization based in the United States, and is recognized as the largest Mixed Martial Arts group in the world attracting the world`s best fighters. Recently, Cheick Kongo, the tough French fighter defeated the UFC newcomer Mustafa Al Turk in the heavyweight fight at the UFC 92, held December 27th, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has gained stature in the sporting world from its early roots in 1991, as a no rules and no holds barred contest where fighters competed in often violent and brutal matches – pitting one martial arts style against another. Senator John McCain once called it “human cockfighting” and led a campaign across the nation encouraging Governors of all fifty states to ban the competitions. Amidst increasing political pressure and decreasing television revenue, the Championship reformed its image with stricter rules, state athletic commission sanctions, and marketing as a legitimate sporting event. Today the UFC boasts a strong worldwide following and pay-per-view television status. Senator McCain now endorses the Championship, and has been quoted as saying: “The sport has grown up. The rules have been adopted to give its athletes better protections and to ensure fairer competition”
Cheick Kongo has been in training since he was five years old when he began learning Kendo and Karate in imitation of his older brothers. His interest and talent in the area of martial arts grew with training in the sports of Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Greco Roman Wrestling and Penchak Silat. Kongo entered the professional arena in 1994 at the age of 19 years and has become a revered veteran in the ring. With nicknames including: “Unstoppable”, “The African Punisher” and “The French Sensation”, Kongo`s current record for wins, losses, draws is 22-4-1.
Kongo`s most recent UFC 92 fight on December 27th, 2008 with Mustafa Al Turk, a British newcomer to UFC and considered a great up and coming fighter, resulted in Kongo`s triumph with a technical knock out (TKO). Kongo dropped Al Turk with two right hands, and pounced on him with elbows and punches which opened up a cut above his eye. The fight was then stopped by the referee after 4:37 in the first round. The fight almost did not occur as Kongo was originally not scheduled to meet Al Turk in this bout. Al Turk was intended to fight Cain Velasquez, but the fight was cancelled due to injury as Vesquez was required to have knee surgey. Kongo was brought in as the replacement and was favored to win, after coming from a Technical Knock Out win over Dan Evensen at the Minneapolis UFC 87. At the UFC 92 Pre-game weigh in, Kongo came out to face his opponent with the “French Sensation” stare and sporting Alenver boxer underwear with the silver/black “money” reversed message on the waistband. Also during the fight, the gold/black “money” waistband was visible peeping out from his boxing shorts – perhaps willing the win and the associated profits from the Championship. It takes a special state of mind and body – both physically and mentally to succeed in Mixed Martial Arts and Alenver is thrilled that Kongo personally chose their product even with no financial tie ins or partnerships. Alenver is a newcomer to the designer underwear world and is undoubtedly proud of its increasing visibility in the world of personalities.
At thirty three years of age, Kongo is considered a veteran of the Mixed Martial Arts ring. He is however still in peak condition, currently dominating the competition. and considered young and ambitious. His win at the close of 2008, sets him up for a great new year in 2009. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is also set for continued successes in the new year, as its popularity grows around the world.
