Yoel Romero has had a string of unfortunate outcomes in his last couple of fights but his teammate Jorge Masvidal thinks he’s still the best middleweight.
UFC 243 crowned a new middleweight champion when Israel Adesanya put on a performance of a lifetime, knocking Robert Whittaker out in the second round.
But Masvidal thinks the damage Whittaker has taken from his two wars with Romero in their previous fights has taken a toll on the former champion.
Whittaker defeated Romero twice. He had a closely contested battle at UFC 213 in 2017, then a proverbial war at UFC 225, where Romero was able to drop and badly hurt Whittaker on numerous occasions, but once again left his fate in the hands of the judges and lost a controversial split decision.
And Masvidal thinks Adesanya is fortunate to not have fought Romero, instead.
“I told everyone that no one is the same after fighting @YoelRomeroMMA you guys will see. Ufc smart for protecting Israel. Yoel wins one and should be next. Should’ve been the one from the get #theresurrection”
Romero then went on to lose a unanimous decision to Paulo Costa at UFC 241, another fight that many believed he should have won. If anyone can relate to Romero, it’s Masvidal, who’s had numerous split decision losses himself.
Still considered one of the biggest threats in the division, Romero may need a couple more wins before he gets another crack at the title, and his manager thinks a fight with the winner of Kelvin Gastelum and Darren Till, who are scheduled to fight at UFC 244, is a logical next move.
“Anyone else want @killagorillamma vs Whittaker? I’m so down for that one. Maybe @YoelRomeroMMA vs the winner of gas and till?”
“Also, can’t wait to see @YoelRomeroMMAvs Izzy. Boogeyman vs stylebender”
